Texture is one of the most important elements to consider in design. It has to do with how things look, feel, and add depth to a space. Texture creates visual interest and draws the eye to different elements within the home. Let’s look at the important materials that bring texture into your home.

Masonry

Curb appeal is every home owner’s dream when they are looking to buy or build a house. The exterior offers the perfect opportunity to add a lot of texture through the use of various finishes. Brick and stone create texture on a façade, adding visual interest and depth. Masonry can be used in so many different ways and is available in different colors and textures depending on what style of house you are looking for. The great thing about masonry is it can also be painted, which allows the brick or stone to lend its texture in a subtle way.

Flooring

Flooring can instantly transform your interior space. Whether a room has vinyl or carpet each element adds texture to an interior environment. This also allows for a contrast between the walls and the floors adding depth of field to an interior. Both vinyl and carpet are tactile elements, meaning they have “hand” that you can touch and feel. If everything within an interior is a smooth surface it causes the element to be glazed over by the eye and almost disappear within the space.

Countertops

Although countertops are a smooth surface, they can add texture a space with the inherent pattern of the stone. Choosing a countertop, whether it be granite or quartz, allows there to be texture and movement within an interior. Some people like a stark white quartz with little to no movement where as other individuals prefer a granite that is more natural with lots of movement. No matter what your preference is there is a countertop that fits your style of home and can add texture to any space.

Balance

Contrast is an essential element within an interior. However, too many different textures can be confusing to the eye, so balance is the key. Which brings up the question…what do you want to stand out within your home? Is it your beautiful vinyl floors or your gorgeous quartz countertops? With texture and contrast you get to decide what you want the focal point of your home to be.
