Let’s chat about a Ventura Homes feature that, so often, is overlooked – the built-in “office.” Comprised of a few handy drawers or AV storage cabinets and a solid workspace, small built-in workspaces are a key way we avoid underutilized space in the niches of a home. They also don’t have to be completely utilitarian. Where there’s a built-in feature, there’s a great design opportunity to enhance the overall style of the home. Keep on scrolling to see just how we’ve made the mini office a staple of Ventura Homes floor plans

Clean Lines, Repeated Textures

It’s hard to go wrong with a linear built-in design. Floating shelves provide a framework for this workspace to become really personalized, while a long and roomy drawer can stow all the classic office junk…and voila! This built-in is functional and beautiful, without the clutter. Utilizing the same countertop material and stain color that is found elsewhere in the home ties this desk niche in so it feels far from being an afterthought.

Natural Light Isn’t Just for Major Rooms

This mini office takes a lot of design cues from above – including additional natural light! When possible, placing a window in a normally window-less space (ahem, hallways) makes a huge difference in how much use and love this pocket of a home will get. Natural light invigorates rooms massive and tiny, so an extra window is definitely a worthwhile feature, especially in an office niche where many a productive day will be had.

Hallways Make Surprisingly Great Office Nooks

Okay, not all hallway scenarios fit the bill…but go look at our Laguna plan to see what I mean here! Tucking an office desk space into a hallway that connects a family room with the private areas of a home makes for a perfect work atmosphere. Imagine it – no more spreading out homework and various projects on the kitchen island (where dinner needs to happen in the next 5 minutes) and you’re not banishing anyone to an isolated bedroom workspace at the back of the house. Some might call this set-up the greatest homework station ever, the craft table of dreams, or the “Mom Command Center”- it really lives up to those titles. Plus, with all the extra hallway length, the cabinet storage can stretch on and on.

L-Shaped Mini Offices Feel Almost Full Size!

This may be my favorite configuration + design of all. With the L-shape, more of the workspace needs can be met. I love the combo of the classic desk space, where the items that are needed for getting work done can be centralized + the clean-cut built-ins on the other side, which can house more decorative items. The balance of open shelving and cabinet doors keep this built-in office space always presentable.

Love them or hate them, desk built-ins are a Ventura Homes design go-to for so many reasons. They offer utility and charm in a home like no other built-ins can, that’s for certain.
