Hi, hello. Let’s talk about bathrooms. They’re so often viewed as a necessary evil in the home, and as such, they are too frequently finished out in the most standard of treatments. Today we say DOWN with the basic bathroom! Each bath space can be an extension of your home’s overall style, so why settle for generic? Here are a few simple, yet impactful ways we dress up bath spaces to make sure they’re just as enjoyable to use and live in as the rest of the home!
In my ~humblest~ opinion, bringing in as much natural light as possible is the most transformative design choice for a bathroom (or any room, for that matter). There are few things cheerier than getting ready for the day in a sunlit room. We always make sure our bathroom plans include strategically placed windows that will let daylight come streaming in.
If a bath space is lacking in the window department though, doing away with an unnecessary interior wall is an amazing way create a light, airy atmosphere. You might replace a wall between a bath and shower area with glass, or even play with wall cut-outs.
Pops of Color
As crisp as a monotone white bathroom can look, implementing bold colors instantly ups the style of small spaces, like the bathroom. Accent walls, colorfully printed tile, painted cabinets …take a look:
These bathrooms go to show that rainbow hues are not the only colors that make a wall pop.
Printed accent tiles…oh, how I love them. A 1’ to 2’ wide stripe of accent tile does wonders in bringing the perfect amount of color to the table (er, tub?).
Painted cabinets are a surefire way to keep your bath space from looking vanilla. We love dark, moody greens and blues that act as a more daring neutral.
Speaking of cabinets, there are so many fun treatments and varieties out there for bath storage. Because bathrooms are inherently small and don’t house as many cabinets as say, the ginormous kitchen down the hall, custom cabinetry can make a bathroom feel so luxurious without a huge price tag.
Mirror front cabinets help create dimension in the room and brighten the entire space. And, bonus: they look super luxe.
Make it float: lower cabinets that hover above the floor have a resort feel to them and are far from basic. And you can’t go wrong with floating shelves; they work beautifully for bathrooms ranging from grand to miniature.
Never underestimate the loveliness of a built-in vanity space! A well-designed vanity won’t be in the way but will add so much warmth to an otherwise solely utilitarian area.
At the heart of all bathrooms lie the plumbing fixtures. They play into the atmosphere of the bath space more than most elements…so let’s chat about drop-in vs. freestanding fixtures real quick.
Freestanding tubs are always a classic, they always look so striking, and fit so many distinct styles. Drop-in tubs are always fun because they allow for even more tile finishes on the front face and deck surround, plus the shape is a little more customizable. Build out the tub deck into the shower area, and badda-bing: you’ve got a sweet little shower bench!
Sinks! Undermounts (the drop-in tub of the sink world) are generally thought of as the bread-and butter variety, but that doesn’t mean they’re boring. With the right sink and cabinet hardware, they look fresh. Vessel sinks (the freestanding tubs’ close relative) can give a bathroom the perfect contemporary touch. Plumbing fixtures matter very much when it comes to creating a bathroom that reflects the style of the overall home, don’t you forget it.
What this all comes down to is this: when you’ve got a home that’s chock full of style, don’t be shy about making the more private spaces reflect that as well! Bathrooms are the perfect little space for indulging in gorgeous cabinetry and fixtures, or playing with bold paint colors and tiles! Don’t let your unique home style stop at the bathroom!
